Ara Vickers: Meet the New ELB!

Hello friends, People are more receptive to tackling climate change when they are given actionable, positive climate news, rather than through threats of inaction. If you’re like me, and are entrenched in climate change research, then framing climate change and other environmental disasters in an optimistic context sounds at best challenging and at worst absurd. After all, the earth is on fire and we need to act! Yet, most people respond defensively when they receive negative climate change information. Of course, this doesn’t mean we shouldn’t share critical climate change information or be complicit climate optimists. Rather, it highlights ...

Elizabeth Silberg: Commit Your Kicker!

What do you think of when you think of Oregon? The Painted Hills or the Gorge? Earthy Pinot Noirs or hoppy IPAs? Pickathon or the Country Fair? From January 29 to April 17, it might be something else that comes to mind… something perhaps not as flashy as our state’s signature natural wonders, drinks, or events, but nonetheless just as uniquely Oregon: the kicker! If you’re new to Oregon taxes, here’s a brief primer. Every two years, when lawmakers build the budget, state economists sit down and predict how high personal income taxes will be. When their predictions are off by 2% or more, the excess is refunded back to taxpayers as the ...

Insights & reflections from our summer intern, Juliáe Riva!

This summer, I was thrilled to be hosted by Oregon Environmental Council through the Emerging Leaders Internship program. I was especially excited because I’d be using my time in the internship to conduct research to help OEC assess its own efforts to support other young or new professionals through its Emerging Leaders Board (ELB). My work included external research, in-depth interviews with staff and former ELB members, and a survey with former ELB members. The culmination of this project resulted in a detailed report, which includes all the data, analysis, and a set of recommendations with regard to reinstating the ELB.  First and foremost, ...

Three Emerging Leaders Remember Outdoor School

Who sits on OEC’s Emerging Leaders Board? Young professionals with a drive to protect the Oregon way of life. And since the late 1950s, Outdoor School has been part of that lifestyle. It used to be that every sixth grader in the state of Oregon spent a week at Outdoor School learning about natural sciences in the best place possible: nature. “Oregon's economy and employment are based on its bountiful natural resources: timber, recreational opportunities, agricultural products, water, wildlife, and minerals. The extent to which Oregon's youngsters learn to understand and wisely use their natural resources today will largely determine their ...
