Skip the DEQ! Hawthorne Auto offers testing on site
by Amy Lewin, Director of Communications
On my list of to-do’s this month was taking my car to the DEQ to get its emissions tested. If you live in the Portland area, this is a ritual drivers of newer cars do every two years to ensure our engines are running clean before renewing our registration.Like most of us, I’ve had the paper on my desk for several weeks, and kept putting it off. I don’t drive that much anymore and going out of my way to get the test done kept moving down on my list of things to do.
Thanks to a nice reminder by one of my colleagues, I realized I could swing by Hawthorne Auto Clinic in Southeast Portland to get my car checked.
The test takes less than 5 minutes to do, and costs $20. Hawthorne Auto Clinic donates the entire amount of the service back to Oregon Environmental Council as a way to show their support for our work for clean air and water, a stable climate and healthy communities here in Oregon.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Cars must be 2005 or newer and you need to be within the 75 days of your registration due date.
- Call ahead to schedule an appointment, it will ensure you get in and out in a reasonable amount of time.
- Once they’ve done the test, the information is instantly transmitted to the DEQ where you can finish your registration online.
Thanks to the team at Hawthorne Auto Clinic for making it a fun and educational experience.
