Skip the trip to DEQ! Hawthorne Auto offers DEQ, too!

by Amy Lewin, Director of Communications

On my list of to-do’s this month was taking my car to the DEQ to get its emissions checked. If you live in the Portland area, this is a ritual drivers of newer cars do every two years to ensure our engines are running clean before renewing our registration.

Co-Owner Jim Houser is a long-time member of Oregon Environmental Council.

Like most of us, I’ve had the paper on my desk for several weeks, and kept putting it off. I don’t drive that much anymore and going out of my way to get the check done kept moving down on my list of things to do.

Thanks to a nice reminder by one of my colleagues, I realized I could swing by Hawthorne Auto Clinic in Southeast Portland to get my car checked.

The electronic transfer of your emissions data to DEQ takes less than 5 minutes to do, and costs just $20, in addition to DEQ’s normal fee ($21) and any DMV renewal fees. Hawthorne Auto Clinic donates the cost of the service ($20) back to Oregon Environmental Council as a way to show their support for our work for clean air and water, a stable climate and healthy communities here in Oregon.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Cars must be 2005 or newer and you need to be within the 75 days of your registration due date.

Dog friendly! My dog Salty got a chance to say hello and enjoy a special treat!

  • It’s always nice if you can call ahead to schedule an appointment. It’s not required, but it will ensure you get in and out in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Once they’ve done the test, the information is instantly transmitted to the DEQ where you can finish your registration online.

Thanks to the team at Hawthorne Auto Clinic for making it a fun and educational experience.

EPA Budget = OR DEQ Cuts of 45%

In the weeks following President Trump’s budget release we’ve all been scrambling to figure out how the cuts will impact Oregon – especially for our air, water and overall environmental health.  We know the projected 31% reduction to the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would include drastic cuts to state and local programs, and now we have a better idea of
