About RaphaelaRaphaela Hsu-Flanders is Program Analyst & Engagement Manager for Oregon Environmental Council
Raphaela joins OEC after working as the Engagement Organizer for the Oregon League of Conservation Voters for the past two years. During this time, she campaigned for pro-environment candidates in the 2016 election, she helped interview and endorse climate champions throughout Oregon’s political offices, she organized members and volunteers to lobby for pro-conservation bills in the state, and she spearheaded the organization’s equity work. She is passionate about engaging underrepresented communities in environmental work, and hopes to see Oregon’s environmental movement grow and diversify in the coming years.
Originally from Boston, MA, Raphaela spent the first two years of undergrad in Minnesota and then moved out west and graduated from Reed College with a degree in Environmental Studies and Political Science. While in school, she worked for an environmental consulting firm, taught science to elementary school classrooms, did research on air pollution and environmental chemistry, and wrote her thesis on the intersection of scientific research and environmental policy.
Raphaela’s passion for environmental work stems from a love of the outdoors and a desire to ensure that we become better, more sustainable stewards of our planet. She spends most of her free time climbing, skiing, biking, and finding other ways to play in the mountains. She also enjoys cooking vegetarian food and always appreciates good book recommendations.
I work to Protect Oregon because…
It is imperative that we combat the exploitation, over-consumption, and wastefulness of our society that has led to the degradation of our natural resources and to social injustices. I live in Oregon because I have fallen in love with this part of the country but we have a lot of work to do.
