Furnishings + building materials
It wasn’t until the late 1980’s that scientists and regulators alike began to consider how much people are being exposed to pollution in their own homes. Our environmental laws are not yet well designed to protect people from pollution that comes from building materials like flooring, wood and paint, or furnishings like carpet and furniture. Controlling dust and air flow will help manage exposure; but there’s more you can do when it is time to renovate or redecorate.
- Look for “third party” certification.Furniture and building materials may have a variety of green labels. Certifications like Greenguard, created independently from industry, are most reliable. You can research labels at ecolabelindex.com
- Keep an eye out for certain materials.Use caution with materials that may be made with solvents, PVC plastics, stain-guard treatment and flame retardants.
- Before you redecorateLearn more about how to choose flooring, window treatments and cabinets, as well as how to avoid PVC plastic and exposure to existing asbestos.
